Health and Safety Training Classes offered at American Red Cross -South Puget Sound and Olympics Chapter - Naval Hospital Bremerton

Programs that develop and implement comprehensive plans which seek to prevent occupational exposure to infectious diseases such as AIDS/HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C, or bacteria, fungi and other bloodborne microorganisms through a combination of engineering and work practice controls, personal protective clothing and equipment, training, medical surveillance, hepatitis B vaccination, signs and labels, and other provisions. Exposure occurs most frequently when nurses, laboratory technicians, physicians, dental personnel, veterinary staff and other health care workers come into contact with an infected patient’s blood (or other potentially infectious bodily fluids) through needlestick injuries or cuts from other sharp instruments that can penetrate the skin including scalpels, scissors, broken glass, broken capillary tubes and exposed ends of dental wires.  Exposure may also occur through human bites or contact of the eyes, nose, mouth or skin with a patient's blood. Included are programs that deal generally with occupational exposure to bloodborne pathogens and more targeted needlestick injury prevention programs for health care professionals that focus on the proper use, assembly, disassembly and disposal of needles and other "sharps". Also included are community level programs that seek to raise awareness about needle safety; reduce the number of discarded needles on local streets; prevent or reduce the risk of injury to the public, especially children, who find discarded needles in back alleys, playgrounds and dumpsters; and provide options for safe disposal of needles where the need exists.

Universal Precautions Programs

Programs that provide instruction that covers a range of basic paramedical techniques (such as controlling bleeding, preventing shock, rigging emergency splints/wraps for bone breaks/sprains) that can be used to provide basic emergency treatment for individuals who are sick or have been injured before professional medical attention is available. Also included is instruction in treating minor injuries such as insect bites, scratches, burns and splinters that normally do not require medical care.

General First Aid Instruction

Programs that instruct the public in the appropriate techniques for prolonging the lives of victims of heart failure until emergency medical care can be provided. Included may be instruction in full CPR which combines rescue breaths with chest compressions (the best option in some emergencies, including those involving infants and children, drowning victims or people who collapse due to breathing problems) and/or hands only CPR which involves chest compressions only, no mouth to mouth contact. Hands only CPR is used in emergencies where someone suffers sudden cardiac arrest.

CPR Instruction

Programs that are designed to increase public awareness of the measures that people can take to ensure their safety while engaging in recreation in, on or around the water.

Water Safety Education

Programs that provide opportunities for young people to learn the basic skills and emergency procedures that are required for the care of infants and small children. Some programs provide certificates for individuals who successfully complete the course.

Babysitting Instruction

Programs that provide information about a wide variety of accident prevention and other safety topics rather than specializing in a particular safety-related area.
