Provides hospital services, which include inpatient and outpatient medical care.

Programs that provide follow-up medical care for women during the first six weeks following delivery to ensure that they are recovering normally from childbirth.

Postpartum Care

Programs that offer the specialty in which all modalities of radiant energy are used for the detection of abnormalities throughout the body, often following the ingestion or injection of a radioactive or radiopaque substance that functions as a contrast medium. This includes but is not limited to imaging techniques and methodologies utilizing radiation emitted by x-ray tubes, radionuclides, thermagraphic devices, ultrasonic devices and radio-frequency electromagnetic radiation emitted by atoms.

Diagnostic Imaging/Radiology

General Acute Care Hospitals

Programs that are staffed by physicians who have special expertise in the care of the musculoskeletal system including the bones, joints, muscles, associated nerves, arteries and the overlying skin. Much of the orthopedic surgeon's practice involves the performance of surgical procedures, but many conditions are treated medically or physically through the use of braces, casts, splints or physical therapy. Orthopedic surgeons provide care for a wide variety of problems that may be present at birth, or develop at any time during the person's lifetime including congenital deformities, trauma, infections, tumors, degenerative conditions, and metabolic disturbances that fall into the category of musculoskeletal abnormalities. Orthopedics may also involve the treatment of secondary muscular problems in patients who suffer from various central or peripheral nervous system lesions such as cerebral palsy, paraplegia or stroke.

Programs that offer individual or group therapy sessions which focus on the remediation of specific articulation problems in which speech sounds are omitted, replaced by substitute sounds or distorted; voice problems in which pitch, loudness or quality of voice is affected; or stuttering.

Childbirth Education

Programs that evaluate an individual's nutritional history and dietary intake and develop a plan which ensures that the person's nutritional needs are met. The evaluation includes a review of the individual's food habits and preferences, an assessment of his or her feeding skills and eating problems and an analysis of biochemical and anthropometric variables including the person's height and weight and the fat content of his or her body.

Emergency Room Care

Programs that are staffed by specialists who have expertise in using operative procedures to alleviate problems when a cure is unlikely using medication alone. General surgery can be used for routine procedures performed in a physician’s office, such as a vasectomy, or for more complicated operations requiring a medical team in a hospital setting such as laparoscopic cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder). Programs that evaluate joint motion, muscle strength and endurance, heart and lung function and the ability of people to perform activities of daily living; and utilize the therapeutic properties of exercise, heat, cold, electricity, ultraviolet, water, manipulation and massage to improve circulation, strengthen muscles, reduce pain and restore mobility to people who have been disabled by a stroke, arthritis, back or spinal cord injuries or other debilitating conditions. Programs that provide for the comprehensive management of the physical, psychological, social, spiritual and existential needs of patients with the objective of helping them achieve the best possible quality of life through relief of suffering, control of symptoms and restoration of functional capacity while remaining sensitive to personal, cultural and religious values, beliefs and practices. The focus of palliative care is on people with incurable, progressive illnesses who are in the early stages of their illness. Palliative care may be provided in a wide variety of health care settings including hospitals, nursing facilities, hospice facilities and the person's own home; and may be coordinated with other services including curative therapies.

Palliative Care

Programs that provide information concerning the basic principles of healthful eating, food handling, food preparation and shopping skills. Included is information about the basic food groups, vitamin and mineral requirements, the relationship of nutrition to the preservation of good health and the prevention of illness, and dietary choices such as vegetarianism.

Nutrition Education

Programs that are staffed by surgeons who have special expertise in the use of medical treatment, minimally-invasive catheter procedures, and surgical reconstruction to manage disorders of the blood vessels excluding those to the heart, lungs and brain. Vascular disorders include peripheral artery disease (PAD), aneurysms, renal artery disease, peripheral venous disease, varicose veins and venous blood clots as well as Raynaud's disease, Buerger's disease and other specific conditions.

Vascular Surgery

Programs that are staffed by specialists who have advanced training in the medical specialty which involves the relief of pain and the maintenance or restoration of stability in individuals who are undergoing surgical, obstetric or diagnostic procedures. Other interventions may include the diagnosis and treatment of long-standing pain problems and the resuscitation and care of people who have cardiac or respiratory emergencies including the provision of artificial ventilation.

Anesthesia Services

Programs that perform a laboratory analysis of body fluids and tissue to determine the presence of irregularities or to identify unknown substances submitted for analysis.

General Laboratory Tests

Programs that provide specialized treatment services for individuals who have chronic skin wounds such as pressure sores or ulcerations associated with diabetes and peripheral vascular disease that have resisted other forms of treatment.

Wound Clinics

Hospitals, health centers, police stations, fire houses and other facilities that are willing to accept, without questions, newborn babies delivered by mothers who are unwilling or unable to care for an infant and are thereby at risk for abandonment. Police reports are generally not filed and no attempt is made to contact the mother's family, even in situations where her identity is known. Infant safe haven statutes vary by jurisdiction with regard to who may leave a baby at a safe haven, the age of the baby at the time of relinquishment, the facilities that can be designated as safe havens, the responsibilities of safe haven providers, anonymity protection for parents and the consequences of relinquishment.

Safe Havens for Abandoned Newborns

Programs that are staffed by surgeons who have special expertise in the operative, peri-operative and critical care of patients who have pathological conditions within the chest. Included is surgical care of patients who have coronary artery disease; cancers of the lung, esophagus and chest wall; abnormalities of the great vessels and heart valves; congenital anomalies or tumors of the mediastinum; or injuries to the chest. Cardiothoracic surgeons require substantial knowledge of cardio-respiratory physiology and oncology as well as capability in the use of extracorporeal circulation, intra-aortic balloon support, pacemakers, pleural drainage, respiratory support systems, endoscopy and invasive and noninvasive diagnostic techniques.

Cardiothoracic Surgery

Programs that are staffed by specialists who provide comprehensive preventive, diagnostic and treatment services for individuals who have diseases or conditions which may affect any organ and are caused by infection agents, bacteria or fungi. Patients with fevers that are unexplained are often seen by these specialists and selective use of antibiotics is often employed as a means of treatment.

Infectious Disease Specialty

Organizations that are involved in the business of preparing, storing, compounding and dispensing drugs in accordance with prescriptions prepared by licensed physicians. Pharmacies also counsel patients on proper use of their medication and verify that new treatments are compatible with other medicines they may be taking.
